Student loans substitute debt for taxes perfectly; thanks to loans, the burden of funding higher education has been largely transferred to the backs of students. In the words of Mike Konczal , "Student debt has taken the place of public funding, and it has become a slow-moving disaster." Their debts normally cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, and these debts can compound and dog them for life. To which the natural question is: “ And how bad would that be?” Will Americans really be corrupted by national health insurance, mandatory vacations, paid maternity leave, rent subsidies, or child allowances? After all, Australia hasn't been destroyed yet – despite having gun control, a national health system, a minimum wage over $16.50, 4 weeks mandatory vacations and 2 weeks guaranteed sick leave.
